French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Washington, United States, on Monday morning (24) to meet with his American counterpart, Donald Trump, at the White House.

The meeting's central theme was the war in Ukraine. It took place on the same day that marks three years since the Russian invasion, and at a time when 37 European leaders met in Kiev to show their support and solidarity . At a press conference that followed the meeting, held on Monday afternoon, Trump announced that "within a week there will be no more war" between Russia and Ukraine. Otherwise, he warned of a possible world war.

During a speech to the country, the US president also announced that he will meet with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky. The latter meeting is expected to take place this week or the following week and should serve to sign an agreement on the exploration of Ukrainian minerals.

Macron, meanwhile, said France's goal is to secure lasting peace in Ukraine. The French president is the first European leader to meet with Trump since he took office a month ago on January 20.

Last week, Emmanuel Macron had already received several European leaders in Paris to discuss the Russian invasion . The Portuguese Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, even participated in one of these meetings . It was also during these days that Macron announced that he would try to convince Trump that the interests of the two countries are aligned with those of their European allies.

Next week, it will be the turn of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, to travel to Washington, the White House announced.
